What Constitutes Cyberbullying: Perspectives from Middle School Students

This study used an explanatory mixed methods approach in order to better understand what constitutes cyberbullying behavior through the lens of middle school students. Participants (N=189) were asked respond descriptive vignettes potential situations, increasing severity. A subset students (N=6) also participated semi-structured interviews. Findings suggest perceive online interactions escalate into when posted messages might damage one’s reputation or friendships (i.e., denigration) inappropriate shared artifacts result negative commentary outing/trickery). Main concerns for these types transactions perpetrator’s intent cause harm as well interaction be publicly. According participants, most distressing was posts (e.g., messages, images, rumors) experienced repeatedly. Instead recipient experience undue stress one post, they may repeated victimization additional comments. Implications educators and limitations are discussed.
